Web
site considerations
A web page can be a way
for an organization to share text and graphical information
through the use of computers via the phone lines. But
first you must consider WHY you should have a web site.
A web site should be considered as any other marketing venture.
Go back to Marketing 101 and use the same theories and principles.
Creating a web site is
very similar to creating a high-quality report in a 3-ring
binder. The web designer will create the cover for the
notebook and the divider pages. You will provide the
content and information that is the real substance of the
site.
You will need to develop
your content. Next you need to create
the design, and hire an organization
to serve as host to your web site.
Then you should decide who will maintain
the site. Once your site is complete, you will need to let
the world know it is there.
CONTENT
- Which of your audiences
will the web site serve and what benefit will they derive
from it?
- What information will
you want to share -- what information are you always trying
to get across to others?
- What geographical
area should it serve?
- Can you type once-print
many times?
- Will you want a discussion
area?
- Will you want pointers
to other sites?
DESIGN
- Who will design the
site (in-house, volunteer, or outside consultant)?
- What look and feel
will it have?
- What graphics shoule
be included?
- Do you have a logo
and colors you want to use?
- What is most important
for people to see first when they arrive at your web sight?
CHOOSE
A HOST
- You will need an Internet
Service Provider (ISP) to host your files and allow others
to see them via the Internet.
- Community
Resource Network (CRN) is Kansas City's nonprofit internet
solution.
MAINTENANCE
AND SUPPORT
- Who will keep the
site updated and fresh?
- Who will respond to
e-mail questions?
- How much time are
you willing to devote to maintenance?
- Is the web included
in you market and budget plans?
- How will you measure
effectiveness?
